Child Obesity: Rules for a Healthy Diet for Kids
Child Obesity. Parent’s, your child’s life is at stake, it’s time to make a change. Failure to take action now will be something you regret for ever.Set your children on the right path to health.
It can seem very hard to find a food plan that your children enjoy eating and that’s also very healthy for them. When there is so much pressure for them to eat healthily, how do you get a reasonable balance between making sure they have a good balanced diet and not getting them so obsessed with food that they will be worried about their weight? Here are some useful hints and tips that will help you with working out a healthy diet for your kids.
1) Don't use food as a treat, this can be the start of child obesity and its gives them the wrong message. If children think of food as a reward for good behavior, this can become a habit for their lifetime. You need to ensure that they see food as fuel and not a treat. Try not to let them feel that they only get the desert they like as a reward for eating their dinner, as this can give out a bad message when they only want to eat sweet treats, or binge on snacks as rewards for doing good things.
2) Try to keep sugar in the diet to as little as possible. Sugar is not only bad for their teeth but also causes children to put on weight if they have too much. It can be very difficult, but it is better to give them more of their main course and less cakes or dessert after their food. If they are still hungry offer them a piece of fruit as this will give them a sweet taste without eating any fat.
3) Keep snacks to a bare minimum. Some children need snacks between meals to give them a burst of energy, but you should only give these if they are needed and not as a habit. Healthy snacks include nuts, seeds and unsweetened yoghurt. If you are traveling they could snack on fruit bars or fresh fruit.
4) Don't give in to advertising aimed at kids; they are not thinking of child obesity. A lot of children will want foods they see on TV or that their friends eat. It can be very difficult to not give in to their moaning for the latest sweet. However, try to think of their long term health and how it impacts on their behavior. I know we all want a quiet life sometimes, just occasionally buy them the things they want, but make sure you limit the unhealthy foods. It is for their benefit even if they don't realize.
5) Set a good example to your children. If you are expecting your children to eat all their vegetables you should too. Children copy the behavior of the people around them, especially parents, and so they will need to see you eating well too. I you try and lead a healthy lifestyle they will copy and it is unlikely they will suffer from child obesity.
6) Eat a wide variety of foods. Unhealthy food is fine every so often as long as there is good healthy foods eaten the majority of the time. So make sure that your kid’s diet has plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, pick the ones they like, and salads mixed with proteins such as beans and lentils and complex carbohydrates like wholemeal pasta and wholegrain bread.
